Product details description
Rabbits are adorable, but they are voracious eaters that can decimate a vegetable garden in a single night. While "chicken wire" is a generic term, for rabbit-proofing, you need a specific mesh size (1 inch or smaller) to prevent them from squeezing through.
Preparation and Materials
You will need: 1-inch hexagonal wire mesh (galvanized steel is best for longevity), wooden stakes or metal T-posts, a mallet/post driver, wire cutters, and heavy-duty staples (U-nails).
Installation Steps
Perimeter Setup: Drive stakes into the ground every 3-4 feet around the garden bed. The height of the stakes depends on the fence height plus the depth of the buried section.
The "Apron" Trench (Crucial Step): Rabbits are diggers. You cannot just place the wire on the ground. Dig a trench 4-6 inches deep along the outside of the fence line.
Unroll and Secure: Unroll the wire mesh along the stakes. Attach it to the stakes using wire ties or staples.
Burying the Bottom: Bend the bottom edge of the wire outward into the trench you dug (forming an "L" shape) and bury it with soil. Alternatively, place heavy stones along the bottom edge, but burying is more secure.
Top Off: Ensure the fence is at least 2-3 feet high. Rabbits can jump, but they usually prefer to dig; a 2-foot fence is sufficient if the bottom is secured properly.
Maintenance Tip
Check the bottom edge regularly after heavy rain, as erosion can expose the buried wire.
